Expectation sky-rocketed when acclaimed cinematographer Ravi K Chandran announced his foray as filmmaker with Yaan. However the end product is a colourful festival on screen sans content. This Jiiva starrer is a mix and match of many films of the past. The filmmaker in Ravi K Chandran is influenced by Mani Ratnam films of the yore.
The movie is set in Mumbai and features Jiiva, Thulasi Nair, Nasser, Jayaprakash, Karuna among others in lead roles.
Chandru (Jiiva) falls in love with Srila (Thulasi Nair) and tries to woo her. She avoids him in the beginning but later falls for him.
Chandru is an MBA graduate and does not have any job. Circumstances force him to leave for a job in Balikistan. Upon reaching there, Chandru gets arrested for drug trafficking and he gets sentenced to beheading in public. Will Chandru escape death sentence and return home? It forms the crux of the story.
If the first half is all about romance between the lead pair, the latter part is packed with action.
The movie’s moments are Jiiva’s screen presence and Manush Nandan’s cinematography. Jiiva’s acrobatic escapes in alien land and the colour visuals are the highlights.Srikar Prasad’s scissors has tried to put some momentum in the story.
Thulasi is bubbly and cute. Nawaz Shah as terrorist does what Bollywood villains in Tamil cinema do regularly. Jayaprakash and Nasser do their part well.
Having been a cinematographer Ravi K Chandran has ensured sure that Yaan is visually aesthetic and look glossy on screen. Had he concentrated more on the script, Yaan would have more bright and beautiful.
Verdict: A deja vu feel
